Today I took a long way back from dropping off my offices bank deposit so I could grab some lunch. I start heading on Outer Drive and then I notice a lot of smoke. Curiosity pulled me toward it. The next thing I know is I’m one of the first people on the scene of this elderly woman’s house burning to the ground. I’m standing there with 3 other people just completely stunned. I call 911 and they said the fire department is already en route. Worried that there is someone stuck in this house we go running down the alley to try and help somebody but realizing it’s too late. I watched in awe as within seconds the entire back part of this house was in flames. We were seconds away from entering trying to help her when we hear a voice from the front of the house saying it’s too dangerous and it’s too late. With no equipment or proper training, we were running into a burning house to try and save somebodies life. We get around the front of the house only to see it’s much worse than imagined.
With the worst feeling of defeat, I stood with strangers for 20 minutes on a cold street down the road from where I live waiting for a sign of life. Waiting for the fire department to arrive. Waiting for everything to stop being in third person.
You always see these stories on the news. You read about them in the paper. You gossip about them. Today, I had the unfortunate account of being involved in one. I hope that I never have to again.
Count your blessings and be thankful. Say kind things to the people who truly matter because you never know when your time is up.
Merry Christmas.
